This means that students understand and respect diversity; act with empathy and courage to ensure equity\, access\, and an anti-racist culture; and address local and global issues through civic and community engagement. In order to help students work toward this competency\, explicit racial literacy instruction is required. Furthermore\, research demonstrates that effective racial literacy instruction must begin in elementary school or even earlier. The Racial Literacy Task Curriculum is designed to help students gain knowledge about race as it has been constructed in the United States and aims to help students acquire an awareness of their own racial socialization and skills for engaging in productive conversations about race and racism. \nThe Newman Elementary School Parent Teacher Council (Newman PTC) serves to enrich the education of all of our children and foster a sense of community.
