Dear Newman Families,

As we wind down this school year, and as I have said before, it went by really fast!  We have had so many terrific things happen this year at Newman! Our family events, Curriculum events for the children, fundraising, hospitality, grants to the teachers all to name a few.  These programs and events are not possible without the help and involvement of our parents, teachers and administrators. The PTC would like to thank several outgoing Board members for their contributions to the Newman community.  Please let them know that they have truly made a difference!
  • Nancy Berger-- VP Enrichment --Bookfair Chair and Grant Committee-- Nancy has been an active member of the board for many years, and her knowledge and input has been invaluable! We are very happy that she will Chair the 5th Grade Activities Committee next year!
  • Angela Cox-- Co-President for the past three years, and Springfest Chair for two years-- thank you Angela for all of your enthusiasm and energy these past years.  We wish you happiness as your youngest leaves Newman and moves up to High Rock!
  • AnneMarie Seppenwolde-- Assistant Treasurer-- thank you for an amazing job with the PTC finances and support with the Yearbook, Curriculum Enhancement, Bookfair, Springfest and Auctions.  We are glad you will guide us with yearbook finances this upcoming year.
  • Bill Paulson-- Bill served on our PTC board for several years as VP of Communications, and has helped to create our website.  In addition, Bill has worked on our Auction-- soliciting contributions and greatly impacting the income that comes in to our PTC!
  • Jennifer Kagan-- VP of Enrichment-- thank you for your continued dedication to our Curriculum Enhancement programs and committee.  Your energy and enthusiasm has significantly benefited each child at Newman and we wish you luck with your move!
  • Margaret Gray-- VP of Fundraising, Playground Committee, Hospitality-- thank you for a successful Springfest (and Auction too!) this year, writing all those thank you notes, changing our sign,  and countless other things that you have done as a Board member over the past several years.

PTC Volunteer Opportunities for 2010/2011
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Calling all Newman Parents!  The following committees are just a few of the great opportunities that need your help next year!  Please consider contacting one of the listed PTC members for more information. The time commitment is variable depending on how much time you are able to give.  The PTC depends on your help to be successful!  For more general PTC volunteer information, contact your PTC Co -Presidents for next year: Denise Bruno at dbruno@newmanptc.org or Christel Morley at cmorley@newmanptc.org
Family and School Activities Committee
Want to get more involved with your kids on a super fun level? Have great ideas for family fun?  This committee is for you!  It is what you make it!  The School and Family Activities Committee is looking for several people to run some really fun events.  If you enjoy ice cream, head up our "Back to School Ice Cream Social", if you enjoy Halloween, get involved with our "3rd Annual Monster Ball Pizza Party".  Grab a few friends...do it together, the more hands the better.  Contact Danielle Berejik, dberejik@newmanptc.org, or Jill Cullison, jcullison@newmanptc.org
Green Kids Newman Committee
Green Kids would love some enthusiastic people to join our fun team to continue and expand our activities!  Why not join one of our three subcommittees:
1. GREEN KIDS ACTION TEAM - this is an afterschool environmental kid's club that encourages students to plan and participate in activities that make Newman and the surrounding community cleaner and greener. This has been a very successful club this past school year and we need more parent volunteers to help so we can open the club up to more students.  Come have some green fun with your kids!  Contact: Elise Coughlin at: ecoughlin@newmanptc.org
2. SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL - grow and formalize walking school buses in the neighborhoods near Newman, recruit and advise 4th and 5th graders on a project to install signs along our routes (grant money available), build on our efforts to improve sidewalk and crossing safety, and more! Contact: ahayek@newmanptc.org
3. EARTH DAY - next year's theme will be the tropical rain forest.  Help organize this awesome event that will be held in mid April!  Contact: Dori Mock at dmock@newmanptc.org.
For general information about the Green Kids Newman Committee and to share your ideas, contact Laure Nawrocki at lnawrocki@newmanptc.org
Metco Family Friend Program
The Newman PTC is looking for a volunteer or two who can work to coordinate Newman's Family Friend Program.  The Family Friend Program Coordinator works to match students from Boston with Needham families for play-dates on select early release dates.  There are usually about 5 play dates a year in which a student from Boston would go home for a play-date with their Needham host family.  Newman currently has seven students in the Family Friend Program and we are adding a few more students in the fall.  The Family Friend Coordinator works as a liaison between Boston and Needham families and helps to facilitate on-going communication between the participating families.  This is a great opportunity to become involved in METCO, and help welcome Boston families into the Newman Community.  For more information, contact Denise Bruno at dbruno@newmanptc.org.
Community Service Committee
Join this wonderful committee and help the Newman families and students make a difference to other organizations.  Work on clothing drives, food pantry drives and raise awareness of those less fortunate than we are!  Contact Sandra Batra at sbatra@newmanptc.org for more information.
Springfest Committee
Do you have some great ideas for planning a carnival?  This committee is for you! Plans for the annual family fundraiser event will begin in January and the event will be held in either March or May--date to be determined.  Be part of one of the subcommittees--Cakewalk, Food, Games and Crafts, help organize the class baskets, there are so many jobs to do to pull it all together.  We really would love to have your help, please contact Cathy Wong at cwong@newmanptc.org or Lisa Hurwitz at lhurwitz@newmanptc.org
Media Center
Join the media volunteers for a unique chance to see your child in action while helping the library run smoothly and efficiently.  Media volunteers help children find books, help run the circulation desk and help shelve books.  No experience is necessary, we will train you in September.  You can volunteer for next year today by sending an email to Melissa Grossman at mgrossman@newmanptc.org.  As soon as class assignments have been made and the media schedule is available, we will send it out so you can let us know your availability.  We plan to have the volunteer schedule in place before the start of school.  The Media Center depends on you!
